Few men during their lifetime come anywhere near exhausting the resources
dwelling within them. There are deep wells of strength that are never used.
Admiral Richard E. Byrd
PARADIGMS, SYSTEMS, ESTABLISHED
Paradigms are difficult to perceive. They are also so deeply
internalized that many of their components remain out of
awareness. This situation can be put to use in discovering them:
argumentation and ferment within disciplines often occurs, so to
speak, at the "fault line" between paradigms. Yet, because a
paradigm so deeply creates "reality," people feel challenged by
its discussion and often experience surprise, disbelief,
resistance, or defensiveness.
--Claire Monod Cassidy, article; Unraveling the Ball of string:
Reality, Paradigms, and the study of alternative medicine. in
Advances, vol 10, #1, 1994
MUSCLE, THOUGHT
A man cannot think deeply and exert his utmost muscular force.
Charles Darwin, Expression of The Emotions In Man And Animals
ADVERSITY, SINE-WAVE, YIN-YANG
The swiftest steed to bear you to your goal is suffering...
Nothing is more gall-bitter than suffering, nothing so honey
sweet as to have suffered. The most sure foundation for this
perfection is humility, for he whose nature here creeps in
deepest depths shall soar in spirit to highest height of deity;
for joy brings sorrow and sorrow brings joy.
Meister Eckhart
SPIRITUAL, LOVE
Love goes very far beyond the physical person of the beloved. It
finds its deepest meaning in his spiritual being, his inner
self. Whether or not he is actually present, whether or not he
is still alive at all, ceases somehow to be of importance.
Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning
"Our life is always deeper than we know, is always more divine
than it seems, and hence we are able to survive degradations and
despairs which otherwise must engulf us."
JAMES, WILLIAM, 1842-1910
SADNESS, DEPRESSION, SUBCONSCIOUS
In the deepest heart of all of us there is a corner in which the
ulimate mystery of things works sadly...
Wm. James, Is Life Worth Living
ART
In art, there are tears that do often lie too deep for thoughts.

FEELING, EMOTION,
"Feeling is deep and still; and the word that floats on the
surface
Is as the tossing buoy, that betrays where the anchor is hidden."
Longfellow: Evangeline, Pt. Second ii line 112
When I judge a person, I attach always greatest importance to
sense of humor. All great people I have known had a deep sense
of humor. It is almost a foolproof device for detecting
greatness. A man who takes himself too seriously is seldom
really a great man. He is lacking something very fundamental
Robert Muller, Most of All, They Taught Me Happiness
People living deeply have no fear of death.
Anais Nin
A little learning is a dang'rous thing;
Drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring;
There shallow draughts intoxicate the brain,
And drinking largely sobers us again.
Pope, Essay on Criticism
These moments of life you can't quite explain that run deep
inside are ephemeral. ...you just have to feel. This is a matter
of the heart.
Robert Redford 10/92 on his movie, A River Runs Through It
PASSION, TASTE, INTEREST
If we had no spiritual asbestos to protect our souls, we should
be consumed to no purpose by every wanton flame. If our sincere
and restful indifference to things which concern us not were
shaken by every blast, we should have no available force for
things which concern us deeply.
Agnes Repplier, Americans and Others 1912, The Mission of Humor
To love deeply in one direction makes us more loving in all others.
Madame Swetchine
EVOLUTION, GROWTH, DISCOVERY, KNOWLEDGE, LEARNING,
"...every action admits of being outdone. Our life is an
apprenticeship to the truth that around every circle another can
be drawn; that there is no end in nature, but every end is a
beginning; that there is always another dawn risen on mid-noon,
and under every deep a lower deep opens."
Ralph Waldo Emerson, Circles
MEMORY
We ask for long life, but tis deep life or grand moments that
signify. Moments of insight, of fine personal relation, a smile,
a glance! Life Culminates and Concentrates. He can only enrich
me who can recommend to me the space between sun and sun--'Tis
the measure of a man, -- his apprehension of a day.
Emerson, Ralph Waldo
"The difference between a rut and a grave is the depth."
Gerald Burrill
The gods approve
The depth, and not the tumult of the soul
Wordsworth, William [Laodamia]
