Anna Wise and the drawing she used to show the different
brainwave frequencies associated with the
Awakened Mind.

Anna Wise, a leading neurofeedback trainer, who used the Awakened mind approach and mind-mirror technology for her work passed away March 3, 2010. She'd been teaching a course at her beloved Esalen, developed Pneumonia and the illness took her shortly after.

Anna was a bright light in the world of Neurofeedback before the field took hold. She taught a model based on the Awakened mind, which she developed with her mentor, Max Cade and then took further. She used the Mind-mirror as her instrument, and worked with several manufacturers over the years to develop software that met her criteria, which ran on their platforms.

Anna's work was not medical or pathology oriented. She walked to the beat of a different drummer, so to some, her work was controversial. There is no doubt in my mind that her contribution to the field of neurofeedback was a major and important one, balancing the yin to so much yang.

She is survived by her adult son, John.

Anna was a dear friend with a big heart, who I first got to know when she attended and presented at the Winter Brain Meetings in Key West. Over time, she became wheelchair, or motorized scooter-bound. She told me that as a child, she was one of the first children to undergo heart surgery. The heart problems came back to haunt her, decades later, but she persisted, often working with colleagues who helped her carry on her work and expand her reach.

I met Gary Groesbeck and his wife that way at a Palm Springs, CA Winter Brain meeting where Anna was a participant and presenter.

Gary emailed me on Sunday, with the following note:
my wife and I have worked with Anna Wise for the last eight years teaching the Awakened Mind protocol. We just spent week with Anna at Esalen teaching with her. I am saddened to say she took ill with pneumonia the next to the last day of the workshop and had to be taken to the local hospital in Monterrey. I finished teaching the class and followed her there.
She passed away this Friday morning with her son John in attendance. She spent her last week teaching what she loved most in the place she loved best. We will miss her energy and can only hope that we can carry on her work for her. She is in the light she knew so well and finally at peace.

Here's an excerpt from the site:

The Awakened Mindà "ž

For almost three decades we have measured the brainwave patterns of people whose states of consciousness one would emulate spiritual masters, meditation teachers, and people of optimum creativity in all walks of life. The brainwave pattern that we found, named the Awakened Mindà "ž , is a combination of all four categories beta, alpha, theta, and delta in the right relationship and proportion.

Since beta is thinking and the combination of alpha, theta and delta is meditating, you can see that the masters are in a state of thinking and meditating simultaneously, with a flow of connection between the two functions. Someone in the Awakened Mindà "ž brainwave state has access to the unconscious empathy, intuition, and radar of the delta waves, the subconscious creative storehouse, inspiration and spiritual connection of the theta waves, the bridging capacity, lucidity and vividness of imagery, and relaxed detached awareness of the alpha waves, and the ability to consciously process thoughts in beta all at the same time!

One theme has run through my work for the past 40 plus years-- a desire to play a role in waking people up, raising their consciousness and empowering them. I was the organizer founder of the Winter Brain, Optimal Functioning and Positive Psychology and StoryCon Meetings and president of Futurehealth, Inc., with interests in (more...)
